There may be more than one possible solution or approach to migrate from one Hypervisor to another. Please consult your Hypervisor vendor for all available options. In this article, we will only cover few scenarios and options.
Things to check before migration:
1. Remove unwanted virtual devices and ISO's attached to the VM
2. Remove or consolidate all VM Snapshots. Less likely chance of Conversion failing if there are no VM snapshots.
VMware to Hyper-V:
Starting with SCVMM 2019 UR3, Microsoft allows you to convert a Vmware Guest VM to Hyper- V or Azure HCI 20H2
Please refer to (© 2022 Microsoft, available at Convert a VMware VM to Hyper-V in the VMM fabric | Microsoft Docs, obtained on March 5, 2022) for requirements and detailed steps.
For customers who do not have SCVMM 2019 UR3, we can follow below approach:
1. Deploying a new SEM appliance in Hyper-V, must be the same version as the running SEM version.
2. Open a ticket with SolarWinds Support who can assist you through moving the data and settings to the new SEM appliance.
Hyper-V to VMware:
When converting from Hyper-V to VMware, you can use your
- VMware conversion tool (it is deprecated from 2nd Feb 2022 ) OR
- Third party Conversion tool
You will need to contact SolarWinds Customer Support to have them put in the password for root on the SEM. Once this is done, just follow the prompts to finish the migration.
In case you are not using any conversion tool,
1) Deploy same version of a fresh new SEM VM in VMware
2) Assign an IP that is reachable to the OLD SEM in Hyper-V
3) Contact Solarwinds support to engage and help you complete the migration.
