Microsoft Exchange application shows false Down status in SAM Application Details widgets

In SAM 6.8, Microsoft Exchange applications may incorrectly appear as being Down in SAM Application Details widgets when monitoring Microsoft Exchange Server 2019. This is due to the deprecation of Unified Messaging (UM) in Microsoft Exchange Server 2019. Upgrade to the latest version of SAM to resolve this issue.

Overview

Microsoft Exchange applications may incorrectly appear as being Down in SAM Application Details widgets when monitoring Microsoft Exchange Server 2019.

Product section

Server Application Monitor

Cause

Microsoft deprecated the Unified Messaging feature in Microsoft Exchange Server 2019 and recommends that customers transition to Skype for Business Cloud Voice Mail. See What's discontinued in Exchange Server for details. (® 2019 Microsoft Corp., available at https://docs.microsoft.com, obtained on February 6, 2019)

This causes Exchange applications to appear as Down in SAM Application Details widgets.

Resolution

Upgrade to the latest version of SAM and then:
  • Remove the legacy AppInsight for Exchange application from nodes, and
  • Reapply the AppInsight for Exchange to nodes.

Warning: Replacing AppInsight templates removes historical Exchange data for the node.

To workaround this issue in SAM 6.8 without upgrading, you can either:
  • Edit the AppInsight for Exchange template to disable the component monitors that appear Down in SAM Application Details widgets, across all nodes, or
  • Edit the AppInsight for Exchange application assigned to individual nodes to disable the component monitors.
