How to activate SEM license using online or offline mode?

This article provides step-by-step instructions how to activate your SEM license via online or offline mode.

Overview

This article provides steps on how to activate your Security Event Manager (formerly Log & Event Manager) license with the online and the offline method.


Note: You must be logged in with an account that has the Administrator role.

Online:   

  1. Open the customer portal at https://customerportal.solarwinds.com/, and then log in with your SolarWinds user ID or individual user account and password.
  2. On the Customer Portal menu bar, navigate to Licenses > Manage Licenses.
  3. Scroll down the page and click the plus (+) icon next to the product that you want to download, activate, or upgrade.  
    Here you will find the activation key.  Please copy this key.
  4. On the SEM Flash console toolbar, navigate to Manage > Appliance > License > Update License (near the lower-left corner), and then enter activation key.
  5. To update your server, restart the installation.

SEM HTML5 Console (versions 6.7 and newer)

  1. In the SEM Events Console, click the Settings button.

  2. On the Settings page, click the Manage License tab, and then click Activate License.
  3. Paste the key into the License Key field.
  4. If necessary, modify or add the information in the given fields.
  5. Click Activate. You should get a message confirming that activation is successful.

Offline: 

  1. Open the customer portal at https://customerportal.solarwinds.com/ and log in with your SolarWinds user ID or individual user account and password.
  2. On the Customer Portal menu bar, navigate to Licenses > Manage Licenses.  
  3. Scroll down the page and click the plus (+) icon next to the product that you want to download, activate, or upgrade.  
    Here you will find the activation key. 
  4. Underneath the activation key, click Activate License Manually.
  5. Complete the form. To generate the Unique Machine ID, please do the following:
    1.     On the SEM toolbar, navigate to Settings. 
    2.     Navigate to License it the left pane. 
    3.     Select Activate or Upgrade License in the top left pane
    4.     Select Offline Activation under Activation Type
    5.     Copy the Unique Machine ID (including the brackets with all characters being case sensitive)
    6.     Please note that the Computer Name is the same as the one found in the Name section of the System Resources tab in the HTML5 WebUI.
  6. Generate the license file, and then save it to a shared location that the machine can access. 
  7. Upload the license file.
  8. To update your server, restart the installation.
