How Log Analyzer (LA) and Orion Log Viewer (OLV) licensing works in the Orion Platform

This article explains how licensing functions if your deployment includes OLV (Orion Log Viewer (OLV) and then you add Log Analyzer (LA). It describes what happens to log messages if an LA license is activated on the same server where other Orion Platform modules are installed, along with available options if you decide you want to have LA and continue utilizing OLV.

In the Orion Platform, Orion Log Viewer (OLV) comes with your product (NPM, NCM, SAM, UDT, VMAN) license plan with basic features and functionality, log message data will be received, but will not have access to live event streaming, the event histogram, event tagging, and more. A free 30-day Log Analyzer (LA) evaluation includes unlimited LA licenses for Orion Platform nodes during the evaluation period. As part of the LA licensing framework, LA receives messages from all nodes the Orion Platform manages.

When the LA evaluation expires, access to OLV features remains but LA features will stop functioning. This means OLV will continue to use Orion Platform nodes for licenses.

Following are descriptions of various scenarios:

• If you purchase the LA license after evaluation, the LA licensing framework combines Orion Platform nodes with your LA licenses. For example, if have NPM SL100 and SAM AL100, and then register a LA100 license, you can monitor up to 300 nodes, but only receive messages from 100 nodes. Of the total (300) nodes, you can select which 100 nodes you want to monitor with LA.
• By design, if you assign an LA license to a node, it consumes a license and you will receive log data from the node. You have the option to exclude nodes from automatically consuming a license if log data is received.
  • NOTE:
    • It is not possible to go over your license count. When you reach the license limit, a notification will inform you that you reached the limit and cannot add more nodes. Log data will be automatically discarded until you free up some licenses or upgrade to a higher license tier.
    • If a node is excluded from consuming a license, any log data transmitted to LA from that node will be discarded until it is added to the LA license pool. The logs will not be processed under basic functionality.
