Kiwi Syslog Server NG archive behavior when preserving source folder structure

In the legacy version of Kiwi Syslog Server, by unchecking the "Create sub-folders (preserve source directory structure)" option in the Archive schedule's Destination settings, it was possible to ignore the source folder structure and place only the log files directly under the ZIP file (flattening them). Since Kiwi Syslog Server NG does not have this setting option, does this mean that it's not possible to ignore the Source folder structure and place only the log files directly under the ZIP file, as is the case with the Legacy version of Kiwi Syslog Server mentioned above?

Overview

When moving from legacy Kiwi Syslog Server to Kiwi Syslog Server NG, administrators may want archive ZIP files to contain only the log files at the root of the ZIP (flattened), without preserving the original folder hierarchy. In legacy Kiwi Syslog Server, this could be achieved by clearing the Create sub-folders (preserve source directory structure) option on the archive schedule. Kiwi Syslog Server NG does not expose an equivalent option in the archive task user interface, which can lead to confusion when archives always contain nested folders.

Cause

Kiwi Syslog Server NG archive tasks are designed to preserve the original folder structure of the source path when archiving log files. The archive configuration in KSS NG does not provide an option to ignore or flatten the source folder hierarchy inside the resulting ZIP file. This differs from legacy Kiwi Syslog Server, where the Create sub-folders (preserve source directory structure) checkbox could be cleared to produce a flat ZIP containing only log files at the root.

  1. Be aware that Kiwi Syslog Server NG always preserves the source folder structure when archiving log files. If your source path includes subfolders and you enable Include subfolders in the archive task, those subfolders are retained inside the destination archive.

  2. There is no built-in option in Kiwi Syslog Server NG to:

    • Ignore the source folder hierarchy, or
    • Place all archived log files directly under the ZIP root (flattened),
      as could be done in legacy Kiwi Syslog Server by clearing Create sub-folders (preserve source directory structure).

  3. If you require flattened archives, this must be handled outside Kiwi Syslog Server NG, for example by:

    • Running an external post-processing step on the archived files or ZIPs, or
    • Using separate tooling or scripts to reorganize the files after KSS NG completes the archive task.

  4. Treat this behavior as a product limitation in current versions of Kiwi Syslog Server NG. If flattening inside the archive ZIP is a requirement, submit a feature request through the standard SolarWinds channels so that the product team can evaluate adding an option similar to the legacy Create sub-folders control.
