Integrating HP-UX with SEM

This article describes how to install and configure a SolarWinds SEM agent on an HP-UX server.

Security Event Manager

For SEM versions 6.7 and newer:

1. Copy SolarWinds-SEM-xxx-Agent-HPUXInstaller.bin to a local or network location.
2. cd to the folder that contains the installer.
3. Enter chmod +x SolarWinds-SEM-xxx-Agent-HPUXInstaller.bin to convert the installer into an executable application.
4. Run SolarWinds-SEM-Agent-xxx-HPUXInstaller.bin as root.
5. Press Enter to start the installer.
6. Press Enter to page through the End User License Agreement, and then enter y to accept the terms if you agree.
7. Enter a custom installation path, or press Enter to accept the default (recommended).
8. Enter the hostname of your SEM Manager. Use the fully qualified domain name for your SEM Manager when you deploy SEM Agents on a different domain. For example, enter SEMhostname.example.com.
9. Press Enter twice to accept the default port values, and then press Enter again to proceed.
10. Review the Pre-Installation Summary, and then press Enter to proceed.
11. Once the installer finishes, press Enter to exit the installer.

    The SEM Agent begins sending alerts to your SEM Manager immediately. To configure the SEM Agent to start automatically on boot, add /etc/init.d/swsem-agent (or swsem-agent) to your list of startup scripts.

Configure the HPUX connector

1. In the SEM Events Console, click the Nodes tab.
2. Select your node in the list, and then click Manage node connectors.
3. In the search box, enter HP-UX.
4. Select the HP-ux Syslog connector, and then click Add Connector.
5. Enter a new name, or maintain the default, and then click Add.

   

6. Under Configured connectors, select the connector, and then click Start.

For SEM versions 6.6 and older:

1. Download the HP-UX lem agent installer from http://customerportal.solarwinds.com.
2. SCP the downloaded zip to HP-UX Server OR use WinSCP to copy to /tmp on the HP-UX server.
3. Extract the SolarWinds-LEM-v6.x.x-HPUXItaniumAgentInstaller.zip file using the unzip or gzip command OR extract the file on your windows machine and upload the setup.bin file to /tmp.
4. As root chmod +x /tmp/setup.bin
5. Execute the running the command ./setup.bin
6. If the installation is successful and the LEM-agent daemon started automatically, you should see the connection to LEM manager by running the command netstat -an | grep 3789

   

7. Now you should be able to see the HP-UX node in the LEM web console under Manage > Nodes.
8. Configure the HP-ux syslog connector with default settings and start it.
9. Create a new filter like Toolalis=HP-UX syslog.
