Overview

When node reports high average response time, this article covers the reason for the behavior observed on these nodes

Product section

Orion Platform

Cause

Orion NPM calculates response time using ICMP ping requests made on the Default Node Poll Interval. Orion pings monitored devices and record the results of the ten most recent ping attempts. Average Response Time is expressed as the average response time of these last ten ping requests. For example, suppose NPM does not receive a ping response within the Default Poll Interval. In that case, NPM will attempt to ping the non-responsive device once every 10 seconds for the period designated as the Warning Interval.

However, the affected node is using SNMP to poll for Status & Response Time instead of ICMP, which has a different way of calculating response time.

Resolution

  1. Open the Web Console as an administrator.
  2. Go to the Node Details page of the affected node and select List Resources.
  3. Change the Status & Response Time from SNMP to ICMP as indicated on the screenshot below:
  4. Click Submit
