Incorrect Volume Size or Drive Letter Mismatch Due to Duplicate VolumeSerialNumbers in SolarWinds Platform

This article provides information about an issue where the SolarWinds Platform displays incorrect volume sizes or mismatched drive letters when multiple volumes share the same VolumeSerialNumber.

Overview

In some environments, users may notice that after polling completes, volume information in the SolarWinds Platform becomes inaccurate. Symptoms include:

  • Drive letters and volume names initially appear correctly, but after polling, one volume’s name may change to another drive letter.
  • Reported volume sizes may become incorrect (for example, a 50 GB drive is shown as 150 GB).
  • Volumes with the same VolumeSerialNumber may appear duplicated in the console.
  • Volume “Type” values may differ slightly (e.g., “FixedDisk” vs. “Fixed Disk”).

Sample affected volumes may contain details similar to:

VolumeID: 65510 Caption: B:\ Label: ABC123
VolumeID: 65515 Caption: Y:\ Label: ABC123

This behavior has been observed across multiple nodes where more than one volume is assigned the same VolumeSerialNumber.

Cause

The SolarWinds Platform currently uses the Volume Serial Number as the primary unique identifier (key) when matching volumes during polling. If multiple volumes share the same Serial Number, the platform cannot reliably distinguish between them, leading to incorrect or overlapping data.

Resolution

As of October 2, 2025, there is no SolarWinds Platform-side configuration or supported workaround to correctly report duplicate Volume Serial Numbers. The platform receives the same identification data for all affected volumes when the Serial Number is not unique, which prevents it from distinguishing between them.

The only supported resolution is to ensure that each volume has a unique Serial Number:

  • Review the affected systems to confirm whether multiple volumes share the same serial number.
  • If duplicates are found, update the serial numbers of the affected drives at the operating system level.
  • After correcting the serial numbers, remove the duplicate entries in SolarWinds and re-add the volumes so they are properly recognized as distinct.
