Inaccurate Cisco hardware health is in warning or critical state in NPM

This article addresses Cisco devices that display a warning or critical hardware health state in the SolarWinds Platform Web Console.

Overview

Cisco devices (such as Cisco 3850 and the Cisco 4500 series and many more) display a warning or critical hardware health state in the SolarWinds Platform Web Console. You may receive invalid or false alerts for power supply voltage and bias current sensors.

Cause

  • The Cisco MIB supported by the device doesn't match the Preferred Cisco MIB that Orion is set to poll.
  • TheDevice reports value 1 (true) on 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.91.1.2.1.1.5 for some thresholds which leads the SolarWinds Platform to display the warning notification. If the device reports a True value for the above OID then it is recommended to open a ticket with Cisco directly.

Resolution

The following procedure resolves this issue sometimes when the conflict exists with the default CISCO-ENTITY-SENSOR-MIB MIB. However, the correct MIB selection depends on the Cisco device.  

 

Resolution 1

1. Change the MIB in the SolarWinds Settings table.

a. Log in to the SolarWinds Platform Web Console. 
b. Click Settings > Manage Nodes.
c. Locate and select the targeted node.
d. Click Edit Properties.
e. Scroll down to Hardware Health Polling.
f. Click the Preferred Cisco MIB drop-down menu and select CISCO-ENVMON-MIB. 



g. Click Submit.
h. Allow 10-15 minutes for polling.
i. Verify that the issue is resolved. 

or (Note: Changing the Database Settings Table will be a GLOBAL change that will affect the MIB for ALL nodes)

a. RDP to the Main SolarWinds Platform Server.
b. Open the Database Manager as administrator.
c. Expand the SolarWinds Database.
d. Scroll down and look for the Settings table.
e. Double click.
f. Click on execute query.
g. Scroll down and locate HardwareHealth.PreferredCiscoMIB.
h. Click on Enable table editing.
i. Change the entry from CISCO-ENTITY-SENSOR-MIB. to CISCO-ENVMON-MIB.
j. Click on Enable table editing.
k. Close the table.
l. Check the entry once more if it was changed.
m. Observe the status of the Bias Current Sensor.

 

Resolution 2

2. Force the sensor status to UP.
a. Settings ->  Manage Hardware Sensors
b. Select BIAS sensors in a warning and "Edit Thresholds"
c.  You can: Force sensor status to UP
 

Resolution 3

 

3.  Disable Sensor
a. Go to SETTINGS → All Settings in the Main Menu bar.
b. Click on the Manage Hardware Sensors link under the NODE & GROUP MANAGEMENT section.
c. Then use the search box to find sensors to be disabled (for example: Bias).
d. Select sensors using checkboxes and click Disable button on the toolbar.
