How to uninstall previous Java 8 versions using Patch Manager

This article describes how to use Patch Manager to uninstall Oracle Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 8 packages before you apply the new package on the target systems. This article only applies to Java upgrade packages.

Overview

When you publish Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 8 packages using Patch Manager, use the Package Boot Editor to select the JRE 8 packages you want to uninstall from the target systems before you install each new package.

If you are running Patch Manager 2.1.4 or earlier, ensure that the updates you want to uninstall are currently installed on the target machines before you perform this procedure.

Resolution

  1. Log in to Patch Manager as an administrator.
  2. In the navigation pane, expand Administration and Reporting > Software Publishing and select Sun Packages.
  3. In the center pane, double-click an upgrade package.
  4. Click Next twice in the Patch Manager Package Wizard window.
  5. In the Patch Manager Package Wizard, click the Package Boot Editor icon.
  6. In the Package Boot Editor window under Before applying package, select a package you want to uninstall.

    If you are running Patch Manager 2.1.5 and the package is not installed on the target systems, Patch Manager will ignore the selection and move to the next selected package.

    If you are running Patch Manager 2.1.4 or earlier, ensure that the selected Uninstall options are currently installed on the target systems. Otherwise, Patch Manager generates an error and the latest Java JRE upgrade will not be applied.

    Do not select a Run below option.  

  7. Select the Enable this action checkbox to uninstall the package.
  8. Repeat step 6 and step 7 for each additional package you want to uninstall.
  9. Click Save.
  10. Close the Package Boot Editor window. 
  11. Complete the Wizard. 
    A dialog box displays, indicating the package is saved. 
  12. Click OK. 
  13. Publish the package  to the WSUS server.

During the uninstall procedure, the Interactive Services Detection window may display, indicating that a program running on the computer is trying to display a message. This window will close automatically after several seconds.
