How to send an email on a trap with trapviewer

If you want to create a mail based alert on a trap, you can use trapviewer.exe.

Overview

This article will show the step-by-step process of sending email on a trap using trapviewer. However, before this work, the device should have been configured to send trap messages to Orion. Refer to your device vendor on how to configure your device.

Resolution

  1. Open the Trap Viewer / Location: C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\TrapViewer.exe
  2. Click on the triangle to bring up the dialog "Trap Server Settings"
  3. Alerts / Filter rules
  4. Add new rule
  5. Under Alert Actions - Add Action - Send an Email / Page

Note: In one case, order to send the email alert to an external account (username@ gmail.com), the setting "Apply this Rule to:" needed to be set to "All Servers" rather than just the main polling engine.
