Removing free pollers before upgrading to SolarWinds Hybrid Cloud Observability 2022.2

In SolarWinds Platform 2022.3 and later, upgrading free pollers is supported. Free pollers will be promoted to regular APEs and then act as full additional poller or free poller based on existing licenses. To upgrade from the Orion Platform to SolarWinds Platform 2022.2, you must remove (uninstall) any free pollers that you currently have.

Overview

Applicable to 2022.2 only:

If you have free pollers installed with your Orion deployment, you must remove them before upgrading to SolarWinds Platform 2022.2. Then assign the nodes polled by each free poller to an additional polling engine (APE).

Complete the following steps to remove the free pollers without losing any polled data.

NOTE: If you are upgrading to SolarWinds Platform 2022.3 or later, you do not need to take any action. Free pollers are upgraded by the installer.

Complete the following steps for each free poller that you have installed:

  1. Uninstall the free poller:

    1. Locate the Orion Platform products installer .exe file on the server where the free poller is installed.

      If the installer file is not on the server where the free poller is installed, search for it on the main polling engine and copy the file to the server.

    2. From the command line, run the following command:

      'path'\installerFileName.exe -uninstall

      For example:

      C:\Users\UserName\Downloads\Solarwinds-Orion-NPM.exe -uninstall

    3. Follow instructions in the console to complete the uninstallation.

    When the free poller is uninstalled, all nodes that were previously polled by the free poller are now unmanaged.

  2. Install an additional polling engine on the server where the free poller was installed. For more information, see Install an additional polling engine, additional web server, or high availability server.

    Note: The installation succeeds even if you don't have a license for the additional poller. However, polling is suspended because of the missing license. Polling resumes when you complete the upgrade and activate your SolarWinds Hybrid Cloud Observability license.

  3. Assign the nodes that were previously polled by the free poller (and are now unmanaged) to the additional polling engine:

    1. Log in to the Orion Web Console as an administrator.

    2. Click Settings > Manage Nodes.

    3. Select the node(s) for which you want to change the polling engine.

    4. Click More Actions, and click Change Polling Engine.

    5. Select the polling engine, and click Change Polling Engine.

When you have replaced all free pollers, you can complete the upgrade.
