Overview

Migrating the Kiwi Syslog Legacy to another Windows Server is straightforward. 
There are necessary preparations and precautions to avoid any issues and to achieve a seamless migration.
Preparations such as credentials to use, disabling anti-virus, etc., and doing backups as precautions.
Please take note that this article is only for Kiwi Syslog Legacy and not for Kiwi Syslog NG

A. Preparation for migration:

1) Download the same version of the Kiwi Syslog application to the new server:

  • Open a browser and log in to SolarWinds Customer Portal.
  • Navigate to Download > Download Product
  • Scroll down to find the SolarWinds Product License entry and click the "Choose Download" button right beside it.
  • Under Product Downloads > Server Downloads > select the appropriate version of the Product to download.
  • Click on the "Download" button.

2) From the old server, export Kiwi Syslog Server Settings:

  • Kiwi Syslog Service Manager > File > Export settings to INI file.
  • Save the "SyslogServerSettings.ini" file somewhere safe on the new server.

3) From the old server, back up the following folders:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Syslogd

*NOTE: If you are saving the Syslog messages(*.txt) to another location, back up that folder and move it to the new server. By default, all Syslog messages(*.txt) are saved in  C:\Program Files (x86)\Syslogd\Logs.

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Kiwi Syslog Web Access\html\App_Data

4) From the old server, deactivate the current Kiwi Syslog License using the "License Manager" Tool located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Syslogd.

5)  From the old server, stop the Kiwi Syslog Service:

  • In Kiwi Syslog Service Manager > Manage > Stop the Syslogd service.
  • In Windows services.msc > Kiwi Syslog Server = "Stop"

6) From the old server, stop the Ultidev Service if present:

  • In Windows services.msc > UltiDev Web Server = "Stop"

B. Installation of the Kiwi Syslog application on the new server:

1) Log in to your New Server using a local administrator account.

2) Turn off Anti-virus, Windows Firewall, and Windows User Account Control.

3) Install the Kiwi Syslog:

  • Right-click the Kiwi Syslog installer and then choose "Properties"
  • Click on "Unblock"
  • Run the Kiwi Syslog installer again as "administrator"
  • Install Kiwi Syslog as a "Service"
  • Complete the installation wizard until you also install Kiwi Web Access (Optional only)

C. Restore the following to the New Kiwi Syslog installation:

1) Import Kiwi syslog Settings:

  • In Kiwi Syslog Service Manager > File > Import settings to INI file.
  • Located the  "SyslogServerSettings.ini" file from backup that came from the previous Kiwi Syslog machine. 

2) Syslog Messages from backup C:\Program Files (x86)\Syslogd\Logs
*NOTE: if logs are located somewhere else, configure your New Kiwi Syslog to point to that location (Kiwi Syslog Service Manager > File > Rules > Actions > Log to file > Path and file name of log file.

3) Syslogs from Web Access (*.sdf files) that came from the previous Kiwi Syslog installation. Save the *.sdf files to the same location on the new server: C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Kiwi Syslog Web Access\html\App_Data

4) Activate the new Kiwi Syslog Server using the "License Manager" Tool located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Syslogd.
