Overview
Pingdom will send an alert to your preferred alerting method when an outage is detected and the outage is long enough to trigger the configured "When down, alert after" timer.
Pingdom always does a second opinion before an outage is confirmed, then it continues to test, and when the "When down, alert after" is reached the alert is sent. This slider essentially allows you to control how many locations you want to be down before you get an alert.
We recommend testing every minute, but alert after 5 minutes. The reason is that Pingdom tests from the outside, all the way from our different data centers, through the backbone of the internet, and into your hosting provider. If you set up instant alerts, you will be alerted to things outside your control such as short network blips and the like.
The SMS/Text alert contains a shorter message with timestamps
Integration alerts via third parties (Slack, Teams, Pagerduty) contain the information set up by the third parties who developed them.

Cause
- A URL or IP not responding with an HTTP 200 OK status code or a 3** redirect ending on an HTTP 200 OK
- Confirmed from at least two Pingdom probe servers in geographically different locations and using different networks to ensure that any problems are independently confirmed from separate servers. In other words, Pingdom Uptime checks have a built-in second opinion.
- After a second opinion confirms the outage, the check will continue on it's defined interval (default value every minute) and the check will be considered down until an HTTP 200 OK is received again
- When a positive response is received, a UP alert will be sent to the same alerting methods that received the down alert, provided that the "Alert when back up" checkbox is ticked
Resolution
To get more details about a specific outage:
- Log in to my.pingdom.com.
- Find the check in the uptime checklist, if it's currently down it will automatically be at the top.
- Click the check to open the uptime report.
- You'll find a list of all outages below the graph.
- The test result log provides timestamps, error messages, and Pingdom Probe Server locations that have verified the outage.
- The Root Cause Analysis is an additional test that is automatically performed after an outage is confirmed to gather additional details on the outage. This report includes IP-address, HTML Headers, any redirect-paths, and a copy of the received base HTML of the monitored site.
- Both Uptime Changes and the Test Result Log can be filtered by outages, and the test result log can be downloaded as a CSV file.
