Overview

This article explains why it's not possible to poll hardware health sensors using WMI on HPE ProLiant Gen10 servers.

Example of users experiencing such issues:

We use the HP Device Monitor Service for Agentless Server software solution to monitor Gen8/Gen9 servers. For Microsoft Windows Server, we use HP WBEM Providers / System Management Agents. With Gen10 servers, HPE no longer supports this solution.
What is the proper way to monitor hardware now on Gen10 servers? We have the agent installed, but are not getting the hardware information.

Cause

HPE ProLiant Gen10 Servers do not support hardware health polling using WMI because:

Gen10 server monitoring is only via Agentless Management.
HPE does not provide Insight Management Agents or WBEM providers for Gen10 servers.

Resolution

According to an HPE ProLiant Gen10 Servers Knowledge article (© 2019 Hewlett Packard Enterprise Development LP, available at https://support.hpe.com, obtained on November 28, 2023), the base hardware monitoring and alerting capability is built into the system, running on the HPE iLO chipset, and starts when power and an Ethernet cable are connected to the server.

This means that:

All core management is out-of-band for increased security and stability.
- No OS software is required.
- No open SNMP port is required on the OS and zero downtime updates.
Monitoring and alerting occurs on key internal server components, including CPUs, memory, temperatures, fans, SmartArray controllers, hard drives (including cache modules) and power supplies.
HPE Systems Insight Manager (HPE SIM) can see the system and provide a preview of System Health Summary and Sub-System details.
