Overview

The Hardware health events report undefined status for both ESX hosts and Windows Servers. The following error occurs:

Hardware health monitoring is undefined.

Cause

The problem is in the validation of certificates for https communication. Validating an entire certification chain takes longer than the default of 15 seconds leading to communication being terminated, resulting in the above error.

Resolution

The workaround is to increase the default timeout value to 120 seconds. 
 

  1. This timeout can be set through the Local Security Policy.
  2. Go to Security Settings > Public Key Policies.
  3. Open the Propertieswindow for Certificate Path Validation Settings.
  4. On the Network Retrieval tab, select the Define these policy settingscheckbox.
  5. Select Automatically update certificates in the Microsoft Root Certificate Program.
  6. Increase the Default URL retrieval timeout (in seconds): from 15 seconds to 120.
