Overview

Alert variables in Trigger Action that are copied or duplicated can often create the scenario where the variable is displayed instead of the actual value when using ${N=SwisEntity;M=Value}.

Orion Platform

Cause

In the old alerting system the NetObject was directly tied to a value in the database, in the new alerting system the NetObject is tied to a SWIS value for the alert itself; therefore when you copy, or duplicate a Trigger Action from another alert the NetObject is tied to the SWIS value for the original alert vs the alert it is copied to.

Resolution

  1. Create a new email Trigger Action for the alert
  2. Use the default settings
  3. Click on "Insert Variable"
  4. Choose the correct Value variable
  5. Save and Simulate the Trigger Action
    • If the Value is displayed instead of the variable in the Simulation, finish setting the message as desired
    • If it still shows the variable instead of the actual value, more troubleshooting is needed
      • Most likely a fresh set of diags and further research and testing
