HTTP 503 error after synchronizing the WSUS server or configuring a task

When trying to set up an update task or synchronize in WSUS you receive a 503 error.

Overview

After you configure an update task or synchronize your WSUS server, the following error message displays:

Download failed. Http status 503 - temporarily overloaded Error Code: 0x80244022

Cause

The Private Memory Limit setting in the WSUS application pool is set too low.

Resolution

Update the Private Memory Limit setting in Microsoft^® Internet Information Services (IIS).

Open the IIS Manager on your WSUS server.
Highlight Application Pools and select your WSUS application pool from the list.
Right-click and select Advanced Settings.
Scroll down and increase the Private Memory Limit from the default 1843200kb (1.8GB) to 8000000 (8GB).
Restart the application pool.
Repeat the update management task.
