Overview

When adding a node in the Orion Platform via Settings > Manage Nodes > Add Nodes, users are allowed to input node information, select objects to monitor through the "list resource" page, and successfully pass all polling tests. However, upon attempting to add the node, an error message appears indicating that the node is already monitored through a polling engine.

Cause

This issue appears to be a regression caused by recent changes aimed at addressing deduplication issues. Specifically, modifications made to handle cases where interfaces from one node are assigned to another have inadvertently broken the functionality of the add node feature. The issue arises when the device being added, whether polled via WMI or SNMP, does not return a sysname value in the OID or WMI query. Consequently, the system mistakenly identifies the node as already being monitored.

Sample:

.1.3.6.1.2.1.1.1.0 = STRING: "Desensitized value"
.1.3.6.1.2.1.1.2.0 = OID: 1.3.6.1.4.1.13742.6
.1.3.6.1.2.1.1.3.0 = TIMETICKS: 3335285488
.1.3.6.1.2.1.1.4.0 = STRING: ""
.1.3.6.1.2.1.1.5.0 = STRING: ""
.1.3.6.1.2.1.1.6.0 = STRING: ""

.1.3.6.1.2.1.1.5.0 - is the sysname OID and its blank

Resolution

To resolve this issue, please upgrade to SolarWinds Platform 2024.2.1 and above.

In the meantime, the following workaround can be used for affected nodes:

  1. Use Network Discovery: This method helps in identifying and adding the node without triggering the error.
  2. Add as ICMP First: Add the node as an ICMP-only node initially, and then change the polling method to WMI or SNMP at a later stage.

By following these steps, users can avoid the error and successfully add the desired nodes to the SolarWinds Platform.
