How to generate a Unique Machine ID (UMID) for offline license activation for SolarWinds Platform

This article provides steps to generate a Unique Machine ID to perform an offline activation for SolarWinds Platform.


The following error message may occur when the SolarWinds Platform does not have internet connectivity to SolarWinds License Server (licenseserver.solarwinds.com or licenseserverstatus.solarwinds.com) or is not properly detecting offline mode. When this occurs, the following error message may appear:

Cause

This issue occurs when one of the following conditions are true:
  1. Poller is unable to resolve domain name to the correct IP address.
  2. Poller does not have internet connectivity to license server
  3. Poller unable to properly detect offline mode.

Resolution

To workaround the issue, manually changing to offline mode using the steps below.

Using License Manager on the Orion Web Console (above 2016.2):

  1. Log into SolarWinds Web Console
  2. Navigate to Settings > All Settings > License Manager

  1. In the URL, append "?offline" at the end.  For example:
http://<Orion IP or hostname>/apps/licensing/license-manager?offline
  1. There will be an indication on the top right that the License Manager is in offline mode:

  1. Select product.
  2. Click Update if you are renewing the license or Add license if this is a new license activation.
  3. Click Copy to clipboard

  1. Navigate to the SolarWinds Customer Portal
  2. Navigate to License Management underneath the activation key, click Activate License Manually
  3. Complete the fields, including entering the Unique Machine ID you copied earlier > and Generate License (.lic) File.
  4. Save the license file to a shared location that the machine can access.
  5. Navigate to the SolarWinds Web Console
  6. Navigate to Settings > All Settings > License Manager > Update/Add License 
  7. Click Choose File

  1. Select the location where the license file (.lic) was saved to.
  2. Complete the steps, then click Action.
