Failure when creating self-signed certificate in Configuration Wizard for Orion Web Console

When creating a self-signed certificate, problems can occur during the Configuration Wizard. These problems include the production configuration failing, resulting in a "Couldn't create self-signed certificate" error message, and the website not being added to IIS.

Overview

When you create a self-signed certificate, two problems can occur when running the Configuration Wizard:

  • The configuration fails, displaying the error message "Couldn't create self-signed certificate"
  • The website is not added to Internet Information Services (IIS)

Cause

Cause 1: Cryptographic Service Providers (CSP) that provide SHA256 encryption algorithm are not installed, such as Microsoft Base Smart Card Crypto Provider or Microsoft Enhanced RSA and AES Cryptographic Provider. Cause 2: Old version of .

Cause 3: User has no write access to  registry.

Resolution

Resolution 1: Install Microsoft Base Smart Card Crypto Provider or Microsoft Enhanced RSA and AES Cryptographic Provider.

Resolution 2: Run , click Next, and then click Repair. Note this resolution applies only to Orion 2020.2.6 and older, and does not apply for versions 2022.x and newer.

Resolution 3: Fix the access permission on  to allow the user write access.
