Overview
When creating a new API token in SolarWinds Platform or SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted, the process fails with the error message, "API token with this name already exists for chosen owner" (or similar).
Product section
Cause
API token names must be unique for each owner account. This error occurs if a token with the same name was previously created and is still active or if a "soft-deleted" or "greyed-out" token exists that has not been full initialized or removed.
Resolution
- Check existing tokens. Navigate to All settings > API tokens.
- Use a unique name when creating your token. You are prompted to enter a name when selecting the account you want to assign the token to.
- Delete the old token. If the existing token with the duplicate name is no longer needed, delete it first, then create the new token with the desired name. Navigate to All settings > API tokens, select the token, and click Delete.
- Initialize greyed-out tokens. Uninitialized tokens appear greyed-out in the list of API tokens. To initialize, select the greyed-out token, and click Initialize, which will take you to the Define settings page, where you can complete the setup. Alternately, you can delete the greyed-out token to free up space.
