Engineer’s Toolset (ETS): Issues due to revoked code signing certificates

We have made the decision to digitally re-sign Engineer's Toolset; the existing certificate is currently scheduled to be revoked on March 8, 2021. Installation of affected versions of Engineer's Toolset may be forbidden by system policy. This article describes steps to address the possible issues in Engineer's Toolset.

Overview

As a best practice and to further enhance the security of our products, we have retained third-party cybersecurity experts to assist us in these matters. These experts are guiding us in improving our processes and controls.
To that end and to provide additional assurance to all of our customers, we have made the decision to digitally re-sign our products and have requested (and received) a new digital certificate. This reflects a recertification of the authenticity of SolarWinds products, both current and future.

What to expect next:
  • We will be issuing new product release for Engineer's Toolset containing the updated certificate.
  • The existing certificate is currently scheduled to be revoked on March 8, 2021.
If they fail to upgrade to the newest version, Engineer's Toolset users might notice the following issues:
  • Users installing or reinstalling versions of ETS, may be blocked by Windows from starting the installer.
  • Users may receive pop-up notifications when opening applications
  • Signed executables may be blocked to run.
  • Unable to install affected version of Engineer’s Toolset for the Web 
  • Unable to install affected version of Engineer’s Toolset for Desktop
  • For ETS for the Web, users may see the error message: Failed: SolarWinds Orion Core – This installation is forbidden by system policy. Contact your system administrator.

Revoked code-signing certificates.

Resolution

If you are experiencing any of these issues, SolarWinds strongly recommends upgrading to the latest available version for both ETS for the Web and ETS for Desktop. You can find the latest version of ETS for the Web and ETS for Desktop in the customer portal . Please see the ETS Installation and Upgrade Guide for upgrade instructions.
