This article describes how to reformat email alerts to make them more readable/informative. Note that it is not a complete guide to how to use HTML tags, what tags are best to use, etc. There are plenty of useful sites online on HTML such as W3 Schools HTML

Go to Settings > Manage Alerts > select the alert "Alert me when an application goes down" > Edit.
Go to TRIGGER ACTIONS tab and edit the Trigger action: Send an Email/Page.
Change Message from Plain text to HTML as highlighted below:
Click Next and then SAVE CHANGES.
When you simulate the action, it will show a neater information as indicated below:
