Discovery import fails on SAM+VMAN Free polling Engine

Error during import. Check running services and try import again. There was an error processing the request. Free poller import fails.

Overview

Steps to replicate the behavior
  • Add SAM node-based license
  • Install free polling engine
  • Check that there is Configuration = FREE (under Solarwinds/Core) present in registry on free polling engine
  • Run discovery
  • Discovery import fails with error present on UI
  • Error in OrionWeb.log

You may also check the log file: C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Logs\Orion\Core.BusinessLayer.log

Several options exist for workarounds.
  • Run automatic discovery on the MONITORING SETTINGS of configuring the discovery.
  • Upgrade to Orion platform 2020.2.1 (not 2020.2 where the issue still existed).
  • Run the import from the main poller if possible rather than the free poller.
