Database login failing for Windows account users after upgrading to 2023.1 and above

When you use Windows authentication to connect to the HCO database and the database SQL server, you can find Database: Login failed for user 'DOMAIN\MACHINENAME$' in the Website log. This can cause intermittent user logouts from the SolarWinds Web Console.

Overview

When utilizing Windows authentication to connect to the SolarWinds database, the following error message may appear in the OrionWeb.log:

ERROR SolarWinds.Orion.Web.DAL.MembershipAccountDAL - Caught exception obtaining user Admin from database: Login failed for user ‘SOLARWINDS\ORION$'.. Exception details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException (0x80131904): Login failed for user ‘SOLARWINDS\ORION$'.

This issue can also cause intermittent user logouts from the SolarWinds Web Console.

Cause

This issue occurs due to the application pool identity couldn’t resolve the domain name and always returns “IIS APPPOOL”, as the computer domain, and as a result, a wrong Logon type is used to impersonate the Windows account.

Resolution

This issue is addressed in 2024.1. Please consider upgrading your environment.

If you cannot upgrade, follow the steps below to change the database account using UPN format:

  1. Launch the Configuration Wizard.
  2. On the Database Account step, select Use an existing account in the Use a Windows or Azure Active Directory section. Enter one of the following:
    • Provide the Existing Account in the UPN format, such as swi-db@win-max.local. (Usually, the user name is in the NetBios format, such as WIN-MAX\swi-db.)
    • Provide an SQL account.
  3. Complete the Configuration Wizard.
