Overview

Apple introduced a new security requirement for all remote support solutions, including Dameware Remote Everywhere (DRE). Without the proper security requirements enabled, the technician may encounter access issues when establishing or during the remote session.

Resolution

To allow remote control, a macOS End User with Admin Permissions must follow the following steps on the device directly:

1. Go to System Preferences.
2. Select Security & Privacy.
3. Select Privacy.
4. Select Accessibility.
5. Click on the padlock icon in the bottom left corner to unlock and allow these settings to be changed.
6. Check the box for the intended Dameware Remote Everywhere Agent.

NOTE: If the Dameware Remote Everywhere Agent is installed on the computer but not displayed in the list, perform the following steps:
1. Click the plus icon under the list.
2. Use Finder to navigate to your Applications folder.
3. Select the relevant Dameware Remote Everywhere Agent.
4. Click Open.
5. The Dameware Remote Everywhere agent or applet should now appear in the list - be sure to check it.

7. Close the Security & Privacy window.

Within macOS 10.15 a Screen Recording option was also added under the same menu that must be enabled as follows:

1. Go to System Preferences.
2. Select Security & Privacy.
3. Select Privacy.
4. Select Screen Recording.
5. Click on the padlock icon in the bottom left corner to unlock and allow these settings to be changed.
6. Check the box for the intended Dameware Remote Everywhere agent or applet.
7. Close the Security & Privacy window.
  • Please note that updating from macOS 10.14 to 10.15 will reset previously set security options!
  • The settings will need to be re-added by the end user after the OS update.
  • In some cases, a system reboot is required for the permissions to be applied appropriately.

Accessibility Access (Events) Dialog

The first time you initiate the DRE connection to the remote Mac running macOS 10.14, the user is presented with an Accessibility Access (Events) dialog. The dialog only displays one time per app during the first connection attempt, even if the app is uninstalled and then reinstalled.

To permit control from this dialog, the admin rights user must follow these steps:

1. Navigate to System Preferences and select Security & Privacy > Privacy > Accessibility.
2. Click the padlock in the bottom left corner to unlock and allow changes.
3. Enter the computer's administrative account credentials.
4. Select the check box next to the required Take Control Dameware or Dameware Remote Everywhere.
5. Close the Security & Privacy window.

What to do if the Full Disk Access dialog displays

The user on the remote Mac may see this dialog display when DRE attempts to interact with files on that Mac, for example, during a file transfer. To allow the DRE interaction, work with the user who has administrator rights on that remote Mac to complete the following steps in the Full Disk Access dialog:

1. Click Open System Preferences.
2. Navigate to Security & Privacy > Privacy > Full Disk Access.
3. Click the padlock in the lower left of the window to unlock and allow changes.
4. Enter the computer's administrative account credentials when prompted.
5. Select the Dameware Remote Everywhere or Take Control Dameware check box.
6. Close the Security & Privacy window.
