DRE technician cannot connect to hosts because Operations permissions are set to Read Only

In Dameware Remote Everywhere (DRE) 7.0, technicians may be unable to connect to hosts and receive a permission error when the assigned permission group has Read Only access for Operations > Devices and Sessions. Change both permissions to Full Access, then refresh the technician session.

Overview

This issue can occur even when the affected user has been granted administrator access. The assigned technician permission group must also allow the required device and session operations. The condition was reproduced by applying the customer’s permission-group settings in a test environment.

Cause

The technician’s permission group has Operations > Devices configured as Read Only. Operations > Sessions may also need to be changed from Read Only to Full Access for the connection workflow to function correctly.

Affected production and version: Dameware Remote Everywhere (DRE) 7.0.

Resolution

  1. Sign in to the Dameware Remote Everywhere web administration portal using an account that can manage technician permission groups.

  1. Go to Admin Area → Management → Technicians → Permission Groups.

  1. Locate and edit the permission group assigned to the affected technician. In the reported case, the group was named “IT Service Desk.”

  1. Open the Admin Access tab.

  1. Under Operations, change the following permissions from Read Only to Full Access:

  • Devices

  • Sessions

  1. Save the changes.

  1. Have the affected technician sign out of DRE and sign back in to refresh the session permissions.

  1. Test Connect to Host again.

If the error continues, confirm that the technician is assigned to the updated permission group. If the permission options are not visible, have a primary administrator or another user with permission-group management access perform the change. Collect the affected host name and the relevant DRE logs for further investigation.

Note: Permission changes may not be recognized immediately by an existing session. Signing out and back in is recommended; in some environments, restarting the affected application or device may be required to refresh the permissions.
