Specify the port DPA uses to send information to the SolarWinds Platform

Database Performance Analyzer (DPA) 2024.2 and later can be configured to send information to the DPA Integration Module (DPAIM) on port 17774 or 17778.

Overview

If you have DPAIM configured, you can display information from DPA in the SolarWinds Platform Web Console. DPA sends information using the SWIS REST Endpoint. In earlier versions, DPA sent this information using port 17778.

In SolarWinds Platform 2023.1, the SWIS REST Endpoint became available on port 17774. Port 17778 is still the default on 2023.1, but users of 2023.1 and later can disable port 17778 if they want to use port 17774 instead.

In SolarWinds Platform 2024.2, port 17774 became the default port used for the SWIS REST Endpoint. Port 17778 is disabled by default in this version, but users have the option to enable it again.

DPA versions earlier than 2024.2 use port 17778 to send data to the SolarWinds Platform. Using port 17774 is not supported.

DPA 2024.2 and later support using port 17774 or port 17778 to send data to the SolarWinds Platform. You can use the system property com.confio.orion.hco.custom.port to define which port you want to use. For new installations of DPA 2024.2 and later, this property present in the system.properties file with a default value of 17774. Upgrading customers can add this value, as described in the following sections.

Note: If the com.confio.orion.hco.custom.port property is not defined, DPA 2024.2 and later use port 17774 by default. If the SolarWinds Platform cannot receive the data using port 17774, DPA attempts to send it via port 17778. If that transfer is successful, DPA changes the default behavior and uses 17778. However, if you restart DPA, port 17774 becomes the default again. SolarWinds recommends that DPAIM users define this property.

To ensure that DPA can send data to the SolarWinds Platform, DPAIM users have the following options.

If your DPA version is earlier than 2024.2

DPA versions earlier than 2024.2 cannot use port 17774 to send data to DPAIM.

If you have SolarWinds Platform earlier than 2023.1, no action is needed.

If you have SolarWinds Platform 2023.1 through 2024.1, port 17778 is used by default. Do not disable it. If you have already disabled it, complete the steps below to disable port 17774 and have your SolarWinds servers use port 17778 again.

If you have SolarWinds Platform 2024.2 and later, port 17774 is used by default. Complete the steps below to disable port 17774 and have your SolarWinds servers use port 17778.

Disable port 17774 in the SolarWinds Platform

To disable the port for a single SolarWinds Platform server, go to Advanced Settings at https://your_server/Orion/Admin/AdvancedConfiguration/ServerSpecific.aspx.

To disable the port globally for all SolarWinds Platform servers, go to Global Settings at https://your_server/Orion/Admin/AdvancedConfiguration/Global.aspx.
Search for Swis.RestEndpoint.
Select the DisableSwisRestndpointOnPort17774 box and submit your changes.
Restart the SWIS service.

If your DPA version is 2024.2 or later

DPA versions 2024.2 and later can use either port 17774 or port 17778 to send data to DPAIM. Port 17774 is used by default.

If you have SolarWinds Platform earlier than 2023.1, complete the steps below and specify that DPA use port 17778.

If you have SolarWinds Platform 2023.1 and later, the SolarWinds Platform can use either port. You can disable the default value for your SolarWinds Platform version to use a different port. (To see which port is being used, check the Advanced Settings or Global Settings as described in the previous procedure.)

If the SolarWinds Platform uses port 17778, complete the steps below and specify that DPA use port 17778.
If the SolarWinds Platform uses port 17774:
- For customers who have a new installation of DPA 2024.2 and later, no action is required. The system.properties file includes the com.confio.orion.hco.custom.port property, and it is set to 17774 by default.
- Customers who upgraded from a version earlier than 2024.2, complete the steps below and specify that DPA use port 17774.

Specify the port that DPA uses to send information to the SolarWinds Platform

Open the system.properties file in a text editor. This file is located on your DPA server in the following location: DPA-install-dir\iwc\tomcat\ignite_config\idc\system.properties
If you have a new installation of 2024.2 or later, locate the com.confio.orion.hco.custom.port property. If you upgraded from a version earlier than 2024.2, add the com.confio.orion.hco.custom.port property.
Set the property value to 17774 or 17778, depending on which version your SolarWinds Platform uses.
Save the file, and restart DPA for your changes to take effect.
