Database index fragmentation check in the Orion Web Console
This article addresses an issue where you are warned about database index fragmentation. You can either receive a "Database index fragmentation check" warning on the Orion Deployment Health page or in the Active Diagnostics app, or receive the "Indexes with fragmentation over 90% found during DB maintenance" event. Make sure index defragmentation is enabled, run the DB maintenance, and re-run the test.

Overview
This article was created for earlier versions of Orion Platform product. For the latest information about handling database index fragmentation in Orion Platform 2020.2 and later, see:

A warning appears in your Orion Platform deployment:
- "Database index fragmentation check" (Orion Deployment Health page, Active Diagnostics: see Troubleshooting and Support - Active Diagnostics - Video)
If the message says "Diagnostics timed out", it means that the Active Diagnostics test did not complete within the defined time range of 30s.
- "Indexes with fragmentation over 90% found during DB maintenance." (Event)

Make sure that Index Defragmentation is enabled, run Database Maintenance, and re-run the Active Diagnostics test.
If the Index Defragmentation is enabled, Database Maintenance runs index defragmentation.
- SolarWinds recommends scheduling automatic defragmentation jobs on your SolarWinds database to minimize database errors and improve database performance.
- Starting with Orion Platform 2017.3, Index Defragmentation is enabled by default on fresh installations. On upgraded instances you should enable it manually.
- Ensure that you have a backup of your database before making any changes to the database.
Step 1: Ensure that index defragmentation is enabled in the Orion Web Console
- Log in to the Orion Web Console using an account with administrative privileges.
- Click Settings > All Settings > Polling Settings.
- Scroll down to Database Settings, and make sure Index Defragmentation is selected.
If the Index Defragmentation option is already enabled, run the "Check if Database Maintenance works properly" test. If the result is Error, review the related errors. Consult the issue with your DBA before you open a support case.
Step 2: Run the Database Maintenance
By default, the Database Maintenance runs automatically at 2:15 AM. Index defragmentation, when enabled, runs as a part of the database maintenance.
To run the maintenance immediately, start Database Maintenance in the SolarWinds Orion > Advanced Features program folder, and click Start.
Step 3: Re-run the test that reported the error
- In the Orion Web Console, click Settings > My Orion Deployment -> Deployment Health
- Find the "Database index fragmentation check" test and re-run it.
The issue should be resolved. If not, run the "Check if Database Maintenance works properly" test.
Additional settings related to index defragmentation are listed in the Settings table. Each setting includes a SettingID beginning with dbm-defragmentation.
