In the video, Create a Manual Discovery Job, I showed how to manually discovery your environment. Manual discovery is typically recommended the first time you discovery your environment so you can determine which devices, interfaces, and volumes you want to monitor.
Now I am going to show you how to automatically begin monitoring based on defined monitoring criteria. This option gives you the opportunity to choose what to monitor upfront and then each subsequent discovery job will automatically monitor discovered objects based on settings defined in the job. This can be especially handy and time saving if you always know what elements you want to monitor
As you can see, when we get to the Monitoring Settings tab, by default it is set to manually set up monitoring. In this case, we want to automatically monitor so I select that option.
When we select the Automatic option, you will notice that the Define Monitoring Settings selection is now available. Click on this button to launch a wizard that will walk you step-by –step through the process.
This wizard will get you quickly up and running by specifying the items that you want monitored.
Here I am going to select the properties of the interfaces that I want to monitor.
I can select the status of the node, the port mode, and the type of hardware.
Next we tell Orion what types of volumes I want to monitor.
Again, you can see a number of options selected by default.
Maybe I don’t want to monitor Unknown volumes so I am going to uncheck that box
If you have Server and Application Monitor installed, you will be given the opportunity to select applications that you want to monitor, like Microsoft Exchange, IIS and SQL Server. For now, I am going to leave the default selections in place.
When you are done, click Finish and you will be returned to the Network Sonar wizard where you can complete building your discovery.
