ConnectNow does not establish links between Nodes in Network Atlas

Overview

This article describes the issue where devices are polled for both Layer 2 and Layer 3 topology, but the accurate topology data is held in Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP).

Cause

This issue occurs when Orion prioritizes the Layer 2 data and ignores the information held in CDP on devices that are configured to poll for both Layer 2 and Layer 3 topology.  

Resolution

  1. Verify that Layer 2 topology polling is disabled on all devices that support CDP. 
    1. In the Orion Web Console, click Settings > Manage Nodes.
    2. Select a CDP node and click List Resources.
    3. Clear the L2 box and click Submit.
    4. Repeat for all CDP devices.
  2. Navigate to the following path in the installation directory: (C by default):\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\Topology
  3. Run SolarWinds.Orion.Topology.Calculator.exe to trigger a recalculation of Topology. 
  4. Allow 1 hour for the topology calculation to complete and then check if the ConnectNow links are displayed correctly in Network Atlas.
