This article provides steps on how to configure a Netgear © router to forward the essential ports to your Serv-U File Server.

- Enter the IP address of your router into your web browser (e.g., Internet Explorer or Firefox). The default IP address for Netgear © routers is 192.168.1.1
- Log in using the default username and password (check router documentation for default values).
- On the left pane, click on Port Forwarding / Port Triggering.
- Click Add Custom Service.
- In the Service Name field, specify the name of the application or service (FTP, FTPS, SFTP, HTTP, PASV etc are all good examples).
- In the Service Type field, select TCP.
- In the Starting Port field, enter the port number that should be forwarded.
- In the Ending Port field, enter the Starting Port if only one port will be forwarded, or the ending port in a range (when forwarding the PASV port range, this value would typically be 50004 so that all ports between 50000-50004 are forwarded).
- In the Server IP Address field, enter in the IP Address of the server which has Serv-U installed so that the traffic is forwarded to Serv-U.
- Click Apply to make the changes.
Alternate Solution
In the case that configuring individual port forwarding rules is not an option, most SOHO routers also include the option to place a single computer in a DMZ, or Demilitarized Zone, for the internal network. This causes all incoming requests to be routed to the computer in the DMZ. These include FTP/FTPS/SFTP/HTTP/HTTPS requests, but can potentially include harmful traffic from the internet as well. If the computer hosting Serv-U has known to be secure and is kept well-patched, navigating to the WAN Setup menu allows you to list a specific IP address on your network that will be the DMZ host and receive all unspecified incoming network traffic.
