Machine Type or Vendor is not detected, incorrect, missing or unknown via SNMP in SolarWinds Platform

This article shows you how to create and configure a custom poller when the vendor or machine type is unable to be detected automatically.

Overview

When the Vendor or Machine type does not display correctly in NPM on a Node Details Summary page, you can create a Custom Poller to ensure that it is shown the way you would like. 

This article provides steps to create and configure the Vendor or Machine Type when the SolarWinds Platform is unable to detect it automatically.

Cause

The Vendor or Machine Type OID is not being recognized when SNMP information is Poller. 

Resolution

Please feel free to file a support case with SolarWinds Support is consistently adding more OIDs, by default, to ensure machine type are detected properly.  If an immediate workaround is required, please use the steps below:

Create New Poller

  1. Log in to the web console with administrative rights.
  2. Go to Settings > Manage Pollers.
  3. Select Create New Poller.

  1. Select the following parameters, and then click Next.
  • Technology: Node Details
  • Poller Package Name: Provide a meaningful name for the poller
  • Test Node: Specify a node to test the poller
  • Tags, Description & author are optional fields.

  1. For the Vendor, select Define Data Source for Vendor.

  1. Enter the required Vendor (Cisco in this example) and click Submit.

  1. Click Yes, the datasource is reasonable.

  1. Repeat the above procedure for Machine Type (Using Cisco 3750 in this example).
  2. SysObjectID is a required field. Select Define Data Source.
  3. Click Browse OIDs.

  1. Search for 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.2 (sysObjectID) and select resulting OID, click Submit.

  1. Click Yes, the datasource is reasonable.
  2. Repeat steps above for all other requested OID's. 

OID for the listed options

  • Vendor = Manually
  • Machine Type = Define name Manually or (1.3.6.1.2.1.1.2)
  • Software version = 1.3.6.1.2.1.47.1.1.1.1.10.1
  • Software Image =  1.3.6.1.2.1.1.1
  • Contact = 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.4.0 
  • Location = 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.6.0 
  • Sysname = 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.5
  • SYSObject = 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.2
  • Description = 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.1.0

  1. Click Submit on the Summary page.
  2. Assign this poller to the appropriate nodes.
  3. Select the poller from the 'Manage Poller' page and click Assign.

17. Select the appropriate node(s) from the list and click Scan Now.

Once the scan completes successfully the poller will be assigned and the Poller Status will change to ON.

After the next Rediscovery (default polling interval is 30 minutes) you will see the Vendor and Machine Type update for the node.
