Overview

Serv-U supports custom event handling, allowing administrators to receive up-to-date information about the state of their file server in real time. By licensing the Serv-U MFT Server and activating this functionality, it is possible to configure various triggers to start various actions within Serv-U. To add an Event in the Serv-U Fileserver:

  1. Open the Domain Details > Events menu.
Alternatively, you can open Server Details > Events.
  2. Click on the "Add" Button in the window's lower left.
Serv-U supports Email Events, Balloon Tip Events, and Execute Command Events.

You can also add filters to the event if you want to trigger only when a filter is met. There are many variables that you can choose from.

Notes: When adding event filters with multiple system variables, add them in only one filter to trigger them properly.

Event Actions

Send Email Actions

Serv-U can be configured to send an email to an administrator or manager when a configured event is triggered. Email actions contain an "Email To" to configure which email address to send to, an "Email Subject" for configuring the subject line of the email, and an "Email Body" parameter that can be used to enter in a short message in the body of the email.

Note: The subject field is limited to 255 characters only

Balloon Tip Actions

Balloon tip actions can be configured to show a balloon tip in the system tray when an event is triggered. Balloon tip actions contain a Balloon Title and Balloon Message.

Execute Command Action

Execute command actions can be configured to execute a command on a file when an event is triggered. Execute command actions contain an "Executable Path" and "Command Line Parameters" parameter.
The Completion Wait Time can also be changed if the administrator wants to delay the command execution after the action (Event Type) takes place.

Note: The Command Line Parameters field is limited to 255 characters only

Note: Ensure the Service account is a Domain or Local admin account.
Disclaimer: SolarWinds does not support script creation, custom queries, etc. Please take a look at this article for more information. Any executable scripts (batch file or PowerShell) should be confirmed as working before they can be used in Serv-U Events. Support's scope only ensures that the Serv-U Event will be executed when triggered.

Creating Common Events

Serv-U allows administrators to automatically create a list of the most common events to save the time of creating each event manually:

  1. Click "Create Common Events".
  2. Select the "Send Email" or "Balloon Tip" actions.
  3. Enter the information as requested.
