Configuration Wizard fails with "Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'ColumnName', table 'Solarwinds.dbo.NodesDataSplitData_X' " during upgrade to SolarWinds Platform 2026.4

During an upgrade, the Configuration Wizard fails to migrate the node records from the old 'NodesData' table into the new 'NodesDataSplit_*' tables. During this data migration, if the wizard encounters a NULL value in one of the source columns (PolledStatus, cmts), the migration will fail. If the Configuration Wizard is rerun, it will complete successfully. However, because the first migration attempt failed, tables containing node data will be removed before the next attempt, leaving the new tables empty.

Overview

During an upgrade, the Configuration Wizard fails to migrate the node records from the old 'NodesData' table into the new 'NodesDataSplit_*' tables. During this data migration, if the wizard encounters a NULL value in one of the source columns (PolledStatus, cmts), the migration will fail. If the Configuration Wizard is rerun, it will complete successfully. However, because the first migration attempt failed, tables containing node data will be removed before the next attempt, leaving the new tables empty.

Cause

NULL values in the source columns in the NodesData table are causing the table migration to fail. You can see an example of the NULL values in the affected columns below. You may have multiple records with NULL values.

Resolution

If the configuration wizard for the upgrade has already been run, you MUST restore the database from a backup taken before the upgrade. You do NOT need to roll back the application.  After the database is restored, we can correct the bad data in the table and then re-run the configuration wizard for SolarWinds Platform 2026.4.

If the configuration wizard has NOT been run for the SolarWinds Platform 2026.4 upgrade, you can also follow these steps to identify and resolve any potentially bad data before running it.

It is possible to have both scenarios at the same time. Check both columns.

You can use either SQL Server Management Studio or Database Manager to run the queries below.

1.) Identify Nodes with NULL values to fix

Run the queries below; if any return rows with NULL values, use the corresponding query in step 2 to update them to a valid value.

  • Check for NULL values in the 'PolledStatus' column
SELECT NodeID, Caption, PolledStatus
FROM dbo.NodesData
WHERE PolledStatus IS NULL;

-- Scripts are not supported under any SolarWinds support program or service.
-- Scripts are provided AS IS without warranty of any kind. SolarWinds further
-- disclaims all warranties including, without limitation, any implied warranties
-- of merchantability or of fitness for a particular purpose. The risk arising
-- out of the use or performance of the scripts and documentation stays with you.
-- In no event shall SolarWinds or anyone else involved in the creation,
-- production, or delivery of the scripts be liable for any damages whatsoever
-- (including, without limitation, damages for loss of business profits, business
-- interruption, loss of business information, or other pecuniary loss) arising
-- out of the use of or inability to use the scripts or documentation.

  • Check for NULL values in the 'CMTS' column
SELECT NodeID, Caption, CMTS
FROM dbo.NodesData
WHERE CMTS IS NULL;

2.) Update the affected rows with non-NULL values

  • Update 'PolledStatus' to the value '2'. This value will update automatically once the polling starts
UPDATE dbo.NodesData
SET PolledStatus = 2
WHERE PolledStatus IS NULL;

  • Update 'CMTS' to the value 'N'
UPDATE dbo.NodesData
SET CMTS = 'N'
WHERE CMTS IS NULL;
