Can not connect to the SQL Server. The Original error is: Logon failed for user '<username>' when running the configuration wizard

This article provides information about a message when attempting to connect to the SQL server when running the configuration wizard with previously saved credentials. If the SQL user password was changed directly on the SQL, the new password would need to be entered through the configuration wizard

Overview

The following error appears when running the Configuration Wizard:

Can not connect to the SQL Server. The Original error is: Logon failed for user 'SolarWindsOrionDatabaseUser'

Cause

This issue occurs when:

  1. The SQL user '<username>' password was manually changed in the SQL server
  2. Trying to connect with an incorrect password

Resolution

If the password was manually changed on the SQL server, enter the new password for the SQL user using the configuration wizard.  If this does not resolve the issue, perform the following steps below:

  1. Check to make sure SQL server is set to mixed authentication especially on new installs.
  2. Use the SA (SQL Administrator) user name and password to connect to the SQL server and then can create a new DB user account/password for the Orion:
