Overview

In some of the SQL text that DPA collects, it inserts a comment such as the following:

/* (inserted by DPA)
Procedure: [dbo].sp_someProcedure
Character Range: 4906 to 6649
Waiting on statement:
This sometimes gets mistaken as a procedure DPA is running, but it is not. This article explains why DPA inserts this information.

Resolution

DPA is providing information about where the SQL statement is being run from.

DPA shows the SQL statements that ran and the wait time for each SQL statement. Stored procedures include many statements. If, for example, a stored procedure included an Insert, an Update, and a select statement, DPA would show the wait time for each one as a separate SQL hash value. It would also try to map each statement to the stored procedure. The name of the stored procedure is usually shown in the comment block.
