Overview
This article shows why Cisco Power Supply Module is showing Failed in Current Hardware Health widgets and the possible cause.
The customer is using Cisco Router 8200 (v17.6.5)
From the SNMPWalk to the device we see the following OID:
.1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.117.1.1.2.1.2.3 = INTEGER: 8
.1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.117.1.1.2.1.2.3 (cefcFRUPowerOperStatus): Integer 8 indicates the status is notPowered (or potentially faulty/unplugged).
Product section
Cause
This scenario indicates a known, false-positive SNMP reporting issue on certain Cisco devices (notably newer IOS-XE, Catalyst 8000/9000, and 8200 series) where the device falsely reports a power supply failure via SNMP, even though the hardware is functioning correctly.
The OID .1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.117.1.1.2.1.2.3 belongs to the cefcFRUPowerOperStatus table (CISCO-ENTITY-FRU-CONTROL-MIB), and a value of 8 translates to failed.
A failed state is typically represented by the integer 8 (failed).
Other potential failure-related states include 9 (onButFanFail) or 12 (onButInlinePowerFail).
- 8 = failed
- 9 = onButFanFail
- 12 = onButInlinePowerFail
For a general "fail" status (e.g., power supply failure), 8 is the expected integer.

Why this is happening
- False-Positive SNMP: The device's management plane is reporting a faulty status (8) for a power module, even though show environment power (CLI) shows ok or normal.
- Bug: This is often caused by a software bug in IOS-XE (reported in 17.6).
Resolution
- Reseat the PSU: In some cases, physically removing and reinserting the power supply can reset the management chip and resolve the false reading
- Upgrade IOS-XE: Check with Cisco TAC for a bug fix version if you are running IOS-XE 17.6 or earlier.
This is a known issue with the Cisco Catalyst 8200 Series Edge Platforms (specifically C8200-1N-4T and C8200L-1N-4T) running IOS XE, including versions around 17.6.x.
The issue is identified as Cisco Bug CSCwc11376, where the cefcFRUPowerOperStatus OID erroneously reports a "failed" status (value 8) via SNMP for a power supply that is actually functioning correctly.
