Change the Retention Settings for Syslogs and Traps in Orion Platform

Overview

If left unchecked, OrionLog databases or any database, in particular, can store massive data, causing system and performance issues. If proper maintenance and retention settings would be placed, such factors could be avoided. 

This article provides steps to change the default Syslog/Traps message retention value in the Orion Web Console.

NOTE: Before increasing retention settings, consider the current retention settings and the amount of database storage required for syslogs and traps, then confirm you have enough available storage on the SQL server.
 

If using Log Analyzer or Orion Log Viewer

1. Log in to the Orion Web Console.
2. Go to Settings > All Settings > Product Specific Settings > Log and Event Settings.
3. Click RETENTION.
4. Change the value for SYSLOGS AND TRAPS.
 
 
 
NOTE: The default value is 7 days.

5. Click Submit to save changes.


If using the Legacy Syslog and Trap, viewers

1. Go to Settings > All Settings Page > Thresholds & Polling > Polling Settings
2. On the Polling Settings page, review retention settings in the Database Settings section
3. Adjust the retention values for Syslog Messages Retention and Trap Messages Retention

4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save


WARNING: If you adjust other retention settings, the retention value for hourly summaries must be greater than the value for detail retention, and the value for daily summaries must be greater than the value for hourly summaries.
