AppInsight database and instance icons and thresholds
AppInsight templates sometimes have the same component names in multiple places in the template. One is for the database and one is for the instance. This article addresses how to tell which component is for the instance and which component is for the database and how to change the thresholds on these components.

Overview
When monitoring with AppInsight templates, there can be component monitors for the individual database, as well as component monitors for the instance with the same component name. When you want to alert on a threshold, you must monitor and change the threshold for the component at the correct level.

In general, and especially on a template, when you see the instance icon, ,the component is for the instance. Therefore, when you override the threshold, you are overriding the instance threshold. When you see the database icon,
one that looks like a disk with horizontal lines, that component is per database.
Also, when you are editing the application (this means the template is already assigned out to the node), the components with green/yellow/red/gray bubbles on them are instance level components. All components that do not have these bubbles are components monitored per database.
If you see a component name and the database name in parenthesis with the green/yellow/red/gray bubble, then you are modifying the component for that specific database.
If you change the threshold on the template, it applies to all applications and all databases using that template, unless overridden.
If you change the threshold on the application, you can override the template threshold by clicking on the "Override template box" to the right of the component, when expanded. If the threshold is not listed for the component, then that means one cannot override the threshold of the component at that level. If the value says "not set", then the threshold was not set on the template, but can be overridden to be set at the application level.
When available, you can set thresholds at the database level. Drill into the database UI from the application (it will list all the databases), then click on the database. The title of the display will say: SQL database <name of the database>. On the Database Details resource, click on "Edit" (to the left of UnManage). Notice that a list of components will appear, with the database name in parenthesis. Click the + to expand the component and modify the threshold.
