An unexpected exception occurred during installation - Error: The following SolarWinds applications must be closed before installation can continue

Overview

This article addresses errors that may occur when installing SolarWinds Orion Platform products.

Issue:
An unexpected exception occurred during installation

Error example: 

The following SolarWinds applications must be closed before installation can continue
 SolarWinds High Availability Services (Process id: 1300)
Close the applications and press Retry to continue installation

Cause

Files in Use Error
A window with the following message displays during installation:
"The following applications are using files that need to updated by this setup. Close these applications and then click Retry to continue the installation or Exit to end it."
Resolution:
This error may occur during SolarWinds installations on Windows 2012 or Windows 8 desktop. Services that should stop during installation or upgrade are not correctly stopped.

Resolution

To resolve this issue:
  1. Click Start > All Programs > SolarWinds Orion > Advanced Features > Orion Service Manager.
  2. Click Shutdown Everything.
  3. Restart and finish the installation wizard


NOTE: Please make sure you close the Orion service manager Application before restarting the installation wizard.
