Alert variables help and tips in Orion

Overview

During the setup on an alert, variables are to be inserted in order to have a more meaningful and understandable message upon the received of the message. This article guides locating the appropriate variables in the variable selection pop-up box when completing an alert setup. Variables available on the Trigger Condition may not be available as the same name in the Trigger Actions or vice-versa.
 

Unresolved variables/custom properties 

 

If a custom property is used for email addresses and does not contain valid email addresses, the alert email will not be delivered (see ProgramData/Solarwinds/Logs/Orion/ActionsExecutionAlert.log). If an alert variable in the body of the email does not resolve, the email will still be sent. The variable specification will be in the email, but not the variable.
 

Copying variables between alerts 

 

You can copy variables between alerts if the scope of the alert variables is the same between the alerts. The scope of the alert is the object that is selected on the Trigger Condition tab, as the selection for the "I want to alert on:" object.
 

Trigger condition 

 

You don't have to change the first drop-down to gain access to the variables. Click the blue arrow for the variable list and select Browse all Fields. If you select a variable that is for a different object than what the alert is for, the first box will be automatically changed to reflect that object when you select the object.
 

Trigger/Reset Action 

 

If the output preview does not reflect values for a selected object and an object description is not available, click Show Variables for and select the appropriate object. A message displays below the list of variables, stating what object is being previewed. Click Change to select a different object.

To locate a status variable, enter status or availability as your search term.

To locate an object name, enter name or caption as your search term. 

To locate custom properties, enter custom as your search term. 

To locate a component value, enter statistics as your search term. 

To define Simple Query Language (SQL) or SolarWinds Query Language (SWQL), enter the variables in the SQL or SWQL query by searching and selecting the variable. The variable displays at your cursor.
