Alert Variable Picker Hangs When Editing Trigger Actions for Hardware Health Sensor-Based Alerts in the SolarWinds Platform

Editing the Trigger Action of certain hardware sensor–based alerts and clicking "Insert Variable" causes the macro variable picker to hang indefinitely, making the web console unresponsive until the request times out. The issue is consistently reproducible across multiple users.

Overview

The behavior only occurs with specific alerts based on the Hardware Health entity (for example, "1 - Hardware Critical"). Alerts based on standard node entities, such as "1 - HSDN - Node Down", are not affected—the variable picker opens immediately, loads all variables correctly, and functions as expected.

For the affected alerts, the variable picker hangs even when "All Variables" is selected without entering a search term.

Steps to Reproduce:

Navigate to Alerts → Manage Alerts and edit an affected hardware sensor–based alert.
Open the Trigger Action and click "Insert Variable".
Observe that the macro variable picker hangs indefinitely, causing the web console to become unresponsive until the request times

Cause

This behavior matches a known issue affecting the Insert Variable picker for Hardware Sensor alerts.

Resolution

As a workaround, please set "MaxSearchDepthOfSubentitiesToPreview" to 0 under Advanced Configuration>Global and retest.

Path to access Advance configuration: https://YOUR_SERVER/Orion/Admin/AdvancedConfiguration/Global.aspx

The setting disables preview-depth expansion used by the picker and has been confirmed to restore loading for affected Hardware Sensor alerts; if needed, you can also try 1 to retain limited preview behavior.

Make the necessary changes and test the issue again.
