Adjusting Cost Threshold and Max Degree of Parallelism values

This article will show how to adjust the Max Degree of Parallelism and Cost Threshold for Parallelism in SSMS SQL Management Studio

Overview

SolarWinds developers recommend increasing the Parallelism values in the database as part of best practices and to ensure Orion runs smoothly.

Cause

Microsofts default settings are not optimal for Orion database performance.

Resolution

1. Login to SSMS: SQL Management Studio under admin account with SA permissions

2. Right click on the master database at the top left and select “properties”

3. Select “Advanced” in the options

4. In the “Parallelism” section, adjust the “Cost Threshold for Parallelism” and “Max Degree of Parallelism” values to the values advised in the Active Diagnostics.

Tip: Cost Threshold for Parallelism is always 50.
