Overview

Extend your monitoring capacity for Orion Platform products such as NPM by combining licenses on a Main Polling Engine or an Additional Polling Engine (APEs). Known as "stacking licenses," this can improve performance if your polling engine is already constrained and you cannot allocate additional resources.

Resolution

For NPM, SAM, and other Orion Platform products, you can extend your monitoring capacity and poll more elements by using multiple APE licenses on the same polling engine, also known as "stacking licenses."

After installing a polling engine, add additional polling licenses to the web-based License Manager in the Orion Web Console, and assign the licenses to the APE where you want to stack them.

NOTE: The following products support an APE that doesn't require an extra license: Log Analyzer, SAM (node-based licensing only), SCM, SRM, and VMAN. You cannot stack licenses for those types of APEs; you can only use them as traditional polling engines.

The maximum number of licenses you can apply to a single server depends on the Orion Platform product. For example, with NPM, you can apply up to 4 polling engine licenses to a single server: 1 Main polling engine license + 3 APE licenses = 4 APE licenses

To stack licenses in the Orion Platform:

  1. Click Settings > All Settings > License Manager.
  2. Click Add/Upgrade License, enter the activation key and registration details, and click Activate.

The activated license will appear in the License Manager.

  3. In the License Manager, select the license you want to stack, and click Assign.
  4. Select the polling engine where you want to stack multiple licenses, and click Assign.

The license is stacked on the selected polling engine, and its polling capacity is extended.

To Deactivate a Stack License

       1. Click Settings > All Settings > License Manager.
       2. Select one of the Stack Licenses and click Deactivate. After some time, the deactivated license will appear in the Customer Portal and be ready to be used.
