Access Denied error when accessing third-party updates

Due to WSUS updates, the permissions in the registry for the Setup folder gets wiped. You often need to re-add the "Users" group with Read permissions.

Overview

When trying to select any third-party update in SolarWinds Patch Manager, the following error displays:


Error: Access Denied.

Cause

Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) was updated, which may delete the Users group from the Setup folder, causing the access to be denied.

Resolution

  1. Log in to the SolarWinds Patch Manager server as an administrator. 
  2. Open Regedit.
  3. Navigate to HKLM > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Update Services > Server > Setup.
  4. Right click Setup and select Permissions.
  5. Ensure that Users is added and has Read permissions.
  6. Close Regedit.
  7. Open the Patch Manager Admin Console.
  8. Refresh the view for the third-party updates.

You do not need to restart any services.
