Access Denied (401) and Unauthorized Error Messages on AppInsight for IIS

Access denied, authorization failed. The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized. Microsoft IIS application is returning a 401 unauthorized. Insufficient rights provided by polling user.

Overview

This article addresses concerns with AppInsight for IIS template which because the Microsoft IIS application once assigned to a node. Sometimes, when polling user is invalid, the server will deny access to the website. This can occur for one binding or all website bindings.

Cause

The user provided for polling does not have sufficient rights.

Resolution

Administrator rights or equivalent credentials to the IIS server being monitored are needed for configuration. Non-administrative permissions for polling and monitoring is only achievable using the optional Orion Agent.
