Scalability Engine installation failed with exception when getting installer metadata in Orion

The article describes what to follow when running the installer to set up Scalability Engine and you run into the error about metadata.

Overview

During Upgrade / fresh installation on Scalability Engine using the online or offline installer, it fails with the following error:

And administration service logs have these message lines.

ERROR (null) SolarWinds.Administration.DataProviders.InstallerMetadataProviderForSwa - Exception when getting installer metadata.
System.ArgumentNullException: Path cannot be null.
Parameter name: path

ERROR (null) SolarWinds.Administration.ProductCatalog.WCF.ProductCatalogProviderService - Failed to get installer metadata
SolarWinds.Administration.Contract.Exceptions.CannotGetInstallerMetadataException: Could not get installer metadata from administration service on main polling engine. Please contact SolarWinds support.

Cause

Missing the Installer entry on the Windows Registry
A mismatched version of SolarWinds Administration Service on the Main Polling Engine and the Additional Polling Engine/ Standby server

Resolution

NOTE:

You can use these steps to reference the different file names for the version that you're having issues with. The download link may not work for newer versions.
If there is any antivirus software that prevents executable files from copying files over then they should be turned off.

On Main Poller, navigate to C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Installers folder and check the version of the SolarWinds.Orion.Installer-2.x.x.x.exe.
On Main Poller and Additional Polling Engine, run regedit.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\SolarWinds\Orion\Installer.
Verify that the path is correct, e.g.:

If the path is empty, add the path below manually:
- C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Installers\SolarWinds.Orion.Installer-2.x.x.x.exe
  - NOTE: Change the file name to match the version you're having issues with.
Re-run the installer on the Additional Polling Engine.

Note: Make sure you don't have EXE (executables being blocked in your environment)

The Orion Installer/Downloader should be able to download executables in your environment without them being blocked by Antivirus; otherwise, it can occur that path here doesn't get updated. Therefore, it will cause any Additional Poller MSI installs to fail as there are no matching paths in the registry on both sides HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\SolarWinds\Orion\Installer.
