4 States of Lock user in home directory option in Serv-U (User Level)

The “Lock user in home directory” option in Serv-U controls whether a user can navigate outside of their assigned home directory. This setting can behave differently depending on how it is configured at the User level and whether inheritance from higher levels is involved. There are four possible states for this option at the User level.

Overview

In Serv-U, configuration settings can be defined at multiple levels:

  • Server

  • Domain

  • Group

  • User

At the User level, the Lock user in home directory option may either explicitly enforce or relax directory restrictions, or inherit the behavior from higher levels. Understanding these states helps explain why users may or may not be able to browse outside their home directory.

Cause

Confusion typically occurs because the User-level setting supports inheritance, which can override or defer to Server, Domain, or Group-level configurations. Depending on how the checkbox is set (checked, unchecked, or inherited), the effective behavior for the user may not be immediately obvious.

Resolution

At the User level, the Lock user in home directory option can exist in four distinct states:

    1. Enabled (Checked)

      • The user is explicitly locked to their home directory.

      • The user cannot navigate to parent or sibling directories.

      • This setting overrides Domain or Group settings.

       

       

    2. Disabled (Unchecked)

       

      • The user is explicitly not locked to their home directory.

      • The user can browse outside the home directory (subject to file permissions).

      • This also overrides Domain or Group settings.

       

    3. Inherited – Locked

      • The option is not explicitly set at the User level.

      • The user inherits a “locked” state from the Group, Domain, or Server level.

      • Navigation is restricted to the home directory.

       

    4. Inherited – Unlocked

      • The option is not explicitly set at the User level.

      • The user inherits an “unlocked” state from higher levels.

      • Navigation outside the home directory is allowed (subject to permissions).

       

Important Note:

This 4 states also applies for "Always allow login" and "Enable account" options at the User level.
